How to preserve your colour

If you’ve recently started colouring your hair professionally, you may be wondering what the best way to preserve and prolong your hair colour at home is. Simply put, coloured hair requires some added T.L.C to avoid it from fading.

So how do you ensure your colour keeps its vibrancy for as long as possible after your appointment? To help tackle the complexities and science behind colour upkeep, we turned to Seniz Alkan. Although she needs no introduction, Seniz Alkan is our colour director and practices colour from her own ‘Colour Pod’ here in the salon. Over the years she has been with Neville’s, Seniz has created trend after trend seen on the likes of London’s top press, including her Luxury Brunette, Halo Face Framing and Silhouette slicing technique. She is recognised for her skills and her achievements and we could therefore not think of a better person to turn to for advice.

Seniz’s top tips to prevent colour fade:

Avoid washing your hair too frequently.

We’ll all agree time is a precious commodity, so this first tip will come as a relief to most of us. By reducing how frequently you wash your hair, you will automatically extend your colour’s lifespan. Seniz recommends washing her hair no more than 2/3 times a week. For those prone to a daily wash, she advises soaking up oil build up at the roots with some dry shampoo between washes.

Use a colour protective shampoo.

Believe it or not, most regular shampoos can strip colour from your hair, thus accelerating its fade, which is why colour shampoo is recommended. By swapping your regular shampoo for a colour specific shampoo or sulfate-free shampoo, you will help reduce the fade and can actually keep you colour looking vibrant for much longer.

Seniz recommends:

Don’t forget to use conditioner.

Applying conditioner is a vital step in prolonging your hair colour, says Seniz. When we colour our hair, it automatically becomes more vulnerable, hence why taking care of it is so vital. By applying conditioner at every wash, you actually help seal the colour in thanks to its hydrating properties, which act as a barrier against colour fade.

Seniz recommends:

Use a heat protector.

Reducing heat exposure is necessary to ensure your colour lasts as long as possible. Whilst removing all heat application is near impossible, there is a way to minimise your hair’s exposure to heat styling and that’s through the use of a heat protector. Its formulation will help insulate your hair by evening out the hot hair distribution.

Seniz recommends:

Apply a hair SPF.

When it comes to hair enemies, the sun’s UV rays make it to number one on the list. Although basking in the sun is extremely pleasurable, the adverse effects prolonged exposure plays on hair colour is considerable. From protein loss caused by UVB’s to unwanted colour changes triggered by UVA’s, one really needs to protect their hair with a hair SPF.

Seniz recommends:

Have regular hair treatments.

By adding regular professional hair treatments to your haircare routine ( and between colour sittings) you can really improve the health of your hair. Treatments will enable your hair to get the correct nourishment and prevent unwanted damage and fade. At Neville we offer a variety of hair treatments that will instantly increase shine and help maintain your colour for longer.
